Four Sources, Four Ways to Stop It

Source one — the supply side. Pressurised, and it will not stop on its own. A burst pipe, a failed fitting, a split flexible hose, a leaking valve, a fractured supply line. The water is under pressure and arriving continuously whether anyone is home or not. How to stop it: the fixture stop if you can identify which fixture is involved — the small valve on the supply line under a sink or behind a toilet. The main shutoff if you can't, if the leak is inside a wall or ceiling, or if the fixture stop won't hold. Then open a low tap — a ground-floor or basement one — to drain the pipes above the failure and reduce what continues to escape. This is the one where the main is the answer, and it's the reason everybody believes it's the answer to everything.

Source two — the drain side. It only flows when you use water. A blocked line, a sewer backup, a failed connection on a waste pipe, an overflowing fixture. The water arriving isn't coming from your supply — it's coming back out of your drainage, and shutting the main changes nothing about what's already in the line. How to stop it: stop using water entirely. Every flush, every appliance cycle, every tap adds to what's returning to the lowest fixture in the property. That is the whole intervention, and it's more effective than anything else available to you. If it's sewage, keep people and pets clear of the affected area, don't dry-sweep or vacuum residue, and photograph the extent before any cleanup.

Source three — an appliance. Isolatable where it stands. A washing machine hose, a dishwasher, a water heater, a refrigerator line, a boiler. How to stop it: the appliance's own valve — the taps behind a washing machine, the stop under a dishwasher, the cold inlet at the top of a water heater. That isolates the failure without shutting down the property, which matters if you'd rather keep a working toilet and kitchen tap. If that valve is seized or you can't reach it, use the main — but the appliance valve is faster and less disruptive when it works.

Source four — outside water. Your shutoff is irrelevant. Groundwater through a basement wall or floor, surface water, a failed sump pump during rain, or rainwater entering through the building envelope. None of this came from your plumbing, and closing the main achieves precisely nothing. How to respond: get power away from standing water safely, move what matters, and address the actual cause — a sump pump, drainage, or the building envelope. Find Your Isolation Points Before You Need Them

Four valves, and most households can name one.

The main shutoff, where the supply enters the building — commonly a basement wall, a crawlspace, a utility room, or a ground-floor cupboard on the street-facing side. Find it, and actually turn it. Valves seize when they sit untouched for twenty years, and discovering that during a burst is the worst possible moment.
The fixture stops, on supply lines under sinks and behind toilets. Check they close. A seized stop turns a small overflow into a whole-property shutdown.
The appliance valves — behind the washing machine, under the dishwasher, and the cold inlet on the water heater. The washing machine taps in particular, because those hoses are behind a large share of sudden interior water damage.
And the curb stop at the boundary, outside. It usually needs a long key rather than hands, and in many areas it's the water utility's to operate — but it's worth knowing it exists if the internal main won't close.

Open a low tap if you've closed the main, to drain the pipes above the failure.
Photograph everything before you clean up. Standing water at full extent, damaged materials, the failure point, and the time. Twenty seconds, and it's the difference between a documented claim and an argument.
Move what matters. Documents, electronics, rugs, anything on the floor in the water's path. Usually the highest-value five minutes available to you.
Clear access to the shutoff, the affected area, and the water heater if it's involved.
Note what changed recently — a new appliance, recent work, a cold snap, heavy rain, or the moment it started. Frequently the fastest route to the cause.

What Not to Do

Don't restore the water to check whether it's still leaking. It is.
Don't run drains "to see if it clears." With a downstream blockage, everything you send down returns to the lowest fixture.
Don't pour chemical drain cleaner into a fully blocked line. It sits above the blockage rather than reaching it, and it becomes a hazard for whoever opens that line next.
Don't cap, plug, or block a water heater's relief valve. Under any circumstances — it's discharging because something needs to discharge.
Don't use a flame or heat gun on a frozen pipe. House fires start this way every winter. Gentle indirect heat only, with the water off first.
Don't touch electrical equipment while standing in water.
Don't dry-sweep or vacuum sewage residue. It aerosolises contaminants — cleanup is containment work rather than tidying.
Don't assume a stopped leak is a solved leak. Water that stopped appearing has often just found somewhere else to go.

When Someone Else Comes First
