Pipes almost never fail in the middle of a run like that. They fail where something is happening to them — at a joint, at a transition between materials, where they pass through framing, where they're badly supported or over-restrained, at the terminations that connect them to fixtures and appliances, and where they cross an unheated space.
Six places, and they account for most interior plumbing failures.
That's useful for two reasons. It tells us where to look, which means a smaller opening in a wall and a shorter search. And it tells you what to think about in your own property, because five of the six are visible or knowable before anything goes wrong.

One — the joints and fittings. Elbows, tees, couplings, and every connection between two lengths of pipe. Stress and workmanship both concentrate here. A soldered joint made poorly, a glued joint that wasn't fully seated, a crimped or push-fit connection made imperfectly — none of them announce themselves, and all of them fail eventually. The tell: a leak at a fitting with sound pipe either side of it. Also thermal cycling — joints on hot lines work slightly with every heating cycle for years.
Two — transitions between materials. Where copper meets galvanised steel, where old pipework meets a newer partial replacement, where any two different metals are joined directly. Why it fails: dissimilar metals in contact with water corrode at the junction, and the failure sits exactly there while the pipe either side is fine. The tell: heavy corrosion build-up right at a transition, frequently the legacy of a partial repipe done without a dielectric fitting. Worth knowing: most properties have been partly updated at least once, so most properties have transitions somewhere.
Three — penetrations through framing. Anywhere a pipe passes through a stud, joist, or plate. Why it fails: this is where fasteners find pipe. A nail or screw driven during renovation, hanging a shelf, or fixing flooring is one of the most common causes of a sudden interior leak — and the damage is frequently not immediate, because a partially penetrated pipe can weep for months before it opens up. Also here: abrasion, where a pipe passes through a tight hole without protection and rubs against the framing every time it expands. The tell: a leak that appeared shortly after work was done in the property. If you've hung anything, laid flooring, or had a trade in recently, say so when you call — it narrows the search enormously.
Four — supports and restraints. Why it fails: pipes need to be supported and allowed to move. Unsupported runs sag between fixings and stress their joints. Rigidly clamped runs with no allowance for thermal expansion stress themselves every time hot water passes through. The tell: ticking or knocking as hot water runs, a visible sag between supports, and failures at fittings rather than mid-pipe.
Five — terminations at fixtures and appliances. Angle stops, compression fittings, and above all flexible supply hoses — behind washing machines, under sinks, and feeding toilets. Why it fails: these are wear items under constant pressure with a finite service life, and they fail without warning at full supply pressure. The tell: none, which is precisely the problem. They're behind a large share of sudden interior water damage, and they're the one item on this list you can replace on a schedule rather than after an incident.
Six — where pipe crosses an unheated space. Attics, crawlspaces, garages, exterior walls, and outbuildings. Why it fails: water expands as it freezes and splits the pipe. The flood arrives on thawing, not on freezing. The tell: the timing. A burst during or immediately after a cold snap, in one of those locations.
Water travels before it appears. It runs along joists, beams, and pipe runs and drops at the first opportunity, so the stain on your ceiling is where the water finished rather than where it started. Cutting under the stain produces two holes and one leak.
So the failure gets located before anything is opened — isolation and pressure testing to identify which section has failed, then acoustic listening, thermal imaging, and moisture mapping to fix it to a point.
And the six places narrow it further. If a leak appeared after someone laid flooring, we're looking at penetrations. If it's at a transition between two eras of pipework, we're looking at that junction. If a hot line ticks as it heats, we're looking at restraint and the fittings near it.
Once we have a point, there's usually a choice about which face to open — the wall itself, the room behind it, the ceiling below, or a crawlspace. If one side is tiled and the other is painted drywall, that decision is worth making deliberately, and it's yours to make.
A repair clamp is a bandage. A sleeve compressed over the failure, holding pressure temporarily. It has a legitimate use — stopping a leak at 2am so the property stays occupied until a proper repair is possible.
It is not a permanent solution, and a clamp fitted inside a wall is a future failure nobody will see coming.
A proper repair removes the failed section, replaces it with new pipe and correctly made fittings, and supports it properly.
Pinhole leaks appearing in more than one place is the clearest single indicator that the system rather than the section is the problem.

High pressure feels like good pressure, which is why it goes unexamined for decades while it shortens the life of every joint, valve, flexible hose, and appliance connection in the property.
The fix is a pressure reducing valve, and it protects everything at once.
And the related issue: if your plumbing has a check valve, backflow preventer, or PRV at the meter, the system is closed — heated water expands with nowhere to go and pressure spikes every cycle. An expansion tank absorbs it, and its absence is a common cause behind relief valves that keep discharging and joints that keep failing.
The sixth place is the one that fails on a schedule, and it's the one you can prevent.
