The gas run — length, size, and cost. A tankless unit demands far more gas than a tank because it heats on demand rather than gradually. Existing pipework is frequently undersized for it, and the further the unit sits from the meter, the larger the line has to be to deliver the same volume. Which means position is a cost lever. Moving a unit closer to the gas supply can be the difference between resizing a short section and resizing back to the meter — frequently the single largest item in a conversion quote.
The venting route and where it can terminate. Venting is specific to the unit, and its length and number of bends are limited. More importantly, the termination has to sit somewhere permitted — clear of windows, doors, air intakes, and property lines, at the right height and orientation. A position that makes sense on a wall can be one the venting simply can't serve, and that's a discovery best made during assessment rather than on installation day.
Condensate drainage. Condensing units produce acidic condensate that needs a drain, often with a neutraliser. The unit must sit within reach of somewhere that discharge can legitimately go. This constraint eliminates a surprising number of otherwise attractive positions, particularly in garages and attics.
Electrical availability. Even gas units need power for controls and the fan, so the position needs a supply within reach. Worth knowing regardless of position: a gas tankless unit produces no hot water in a power cut, where a conventional gas tank frequently does.
The distance to your fixtures — which is the wait at your tap. This is the one people don't think about until afterward. Hot water still has to travel the pipe, and that pipe is full of cold water. If the new position is further from your bathroom than the old tank was, your wait gets longer — permanently, on every use, forever. If the wait is already your complaint, this is the section that matters most, because recirculation is the fix and it's easier to plan around at installation.
Service access. Tankless units need periodic descaling, filter cleaning, and occasional error diagnosis. The position has to allow a technician to actually work on it, with manufacturer clearances respected. A unit crammed into a cupboard or mounted high in an awkward corner turns routine annual maintenance into an awkward job — which is exactly the maintenance most likely to be skipped.
Freeze exposure. Garages, attics, crawlspaces, and exterior walls carry a freeze risk, and some installations are exterior by design. The position determines whether that's a consideration at all, and whether freeze protection needs planning.
