The Order Water Passes Through

From the point it enters the building to the point it reaches a tap. Not every property needs every stage — but where a stage is needed, its position isn't optional.

  7. The softener itself. By now the water reaching it is free of sediment, iron, and chlorine — which is the difference between resin that lasts and resin that quietly fails.
  8. The branch points — and this is where design decisions get made. Outdoor taps and irrigation should be taken off upstream of the softener. Plants gain nothing from softened water and you'd be spending salt on your lawn. A cold drinking tap can also be taken upstream if you'd prefer unsoftened water for drinking and cooking. This is a pipework decision made at installation — retrofitting it later means opening the line again.
  9. The water heater. Downstream, always — it's the primary beneficiary. Scale forms where water is heated, so the heater is what hard water damages most and what softening protects most.
  10. Point-of-use treatment, at the tap. Reverse osmosis for drinking water sits at the end, serving one outlet rather than the property.

The test doesn't just size the softener. It determines the sequence — which stages you need and in what order.
